Quality Building Materials - Est. 1952

C & S Lumber Co. began in March 1952 as the dream of Millbury resident Joseph Cataldo, a young World War II veteran, and his friend and business partner Henry Senecal. With only a car and thirty-five dollars between them, Joe and Henry purchased their first lift of lumber and went to work to make their dream a reality.

For its first few months, C & S Lumber was located on the corner of Millbury Avenue and Linda Avenue in a small rented lot. The office was a one-room shack that Joe and Henry built themselves, and phone calls were handled by Joe's wife Rose in their second-floor apartment on Main Street.

With help from Joe's father Fortunato, who owned not only the apartment building at 122 Main Street but also the land behind it, Joe and Henry were able to acquire the space they needed for their prospering lumber company. On July 12, 1952, C & S moved from the lot on Millbury Avenue to 124 Main Street, where it has remained for over six decades.

In 1953, Henry decided to relocate to Florida and sold his half of the business to Joe. With a small crew of dedicated employees, however, Joe continued to pursue his dream of operating a successful lumber company, and his hard work and dedication eventually paid off. By 1960, C & S Lumber had a proper office and warehouse, and that initial lift of lumber had become an impressive inventory of building materials. Ten years later, Joe opened a wholesale branch on McCracken Road.

By 1970, Joe owned his own tractor-trailers and was hauling his own lumber from Canada and Maine, often cutting it himself for the shorter lengths and narrower widths needed at the retail yard. In 1978, Joe relinquished the retail business to his eldest daughter Roseanne in order to focus on the wholesale branch. Together with her son Steve, Roseanne continues to own and operate C & S Lumber out of those same two buildings constructed by her father back in 1952.

Despite the many changes of the last six decades, C & S Lumber - family owned and operated for three generations - continues to live out the mission of its founder: to provide a complete line of quality building materials at competitive prices.
